We had a great meeting on August 25th when we hosted historian, storyteller, and documentary filmmaker Jon Scott Bennett. The importance of social media was stressed as a means of collecting stories, making connections, and educating people of all ages to get excited about history. He showed us reels and videos from his work and explained that he uses YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X to share his content, making history exciting, entertaining, and available to everyone.

As Mr. Bennett relayed, we live in a region brimming with history, that we may know little about. He has done extensive research and has made two excellent documentaries including one on the Pound Ridge Massacre and another on the legend of the Leatherman. The five part docuseries on the Peekskill Riots are particularly interesting. If you are unaware of this important piece of Hudson Valley history, you can see the series on YouTube or on his website www.jonscottbennett.com.

Jon is currently giving historic tours with the New York Boat Company out of Peekskill on Sunday afternoons. The 2-hour ride goes up the Hudson River to West Point and back and through October. To book go to www.nyboatco.com

Jonathan Redeker

On Tuesday August 4th, we had the pleasure of hosting Jonathan Redeker, Orange County Legislator, representing District 2, the Towns of Goshen and Warwick as well as the Villages of Goshen and Florida. A long time Goshen resident, he is also the coordinator for building technology programs and professional development in technology implementation at Goshen Central School.
Legislator Redeker stated he wanted to come to our Rotary Club meeting as a public servant, to be a bridge builder, to see how we could work together to uplift others as a community.
His platform includes several issues also important to Rotary including advocating for health and mental health services, ending food insecurity, finding affordable housing solutions, and ensuring a clean environment and safe drinking water. He also stated that we need to invest more in resources for vulnerable seniors and veterans. Existing programs are underutilized due to the public’s limited awareness, and he feels strongly that there is a need for physical outreach rather than social media.

Tom Grimaldi is the Goshen Rotary Liaison and teacher, Christina Maliwacki, is the Interact Advisor.

Installation Dinner 2026-7

The 98th Installation of Officers and Directors for the Rotary Club of Goshen NY for year 2026-2027 took place on July 16th at Limoncello’s at the Orange Inn. It was an evening of fellowship and laughs and song courtesy of Marty Schwartz.

District 7210 Governor, Carrie Hernandez of the Brewster Club performed the swearing in of Ron Klieverik, who takes the reins as President for the third time since 2008. Assistant Governor, Neil Sinclair of the Warwick Valley Club announced the new Board of Directors including Ginny Levenback, Rob Doss, and Neal Frishberg.

On July 7th we welcomed Ron Klieverik as President for the 2026-27 Rotary year and thanked Paul MacLane for his service. The theme this year is Create Lasting Impact and we look forward to finding ways we can challenge ourselves to be the change here in our community and worldwide, not just for now, but into the future as well.

Our guest Speaker was Michael J. Gilfeather, President and CEO of Orange Bank and Trust. Mr. Gilfeather, a former Westchester Rotarian and Paul Harris Fellow, shared with us the history of Orange Bank and Trust. Originally established in 1892 as the Orange County Safe Deposit and Trust Company with just one location in Middletown, NY, is now a regional bank with offices in Orange, Rockland, Westchester, and Bronx Counties. Mr. Gilfeather stressed that the success and growth of the bank was due to conservative banking practices, ongoing innovation, commitment to the community and focus on business relationships. There are also private banking, trust, estate, and wealth management arms located in the Goshen offices. (OBT, Orange County Bancorp, Inc on the Nasdaq)

Mr. Gilfeather is also on the Board of Directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of NY located in downtown Manhattan. He is one of nine people chosen to represent different sectors including banking, local industry, and non-profits with regard to the federal reserve management. Fun fact, he visited the very secure gold custody vaults in the basement of the building and held a gold bar. Weight: ~29 pounds. (l to r: Michael J. Gilfeather, President and CEO of Orange Bank and Trust and Ron Klieverik, President of Goshen Rotary)

Our June 23rd club meeting happened outside at Mark Gargiulo’s home. We had a very productive meeting with the 2026 Great American Weekend 5K & 10K Goshen Rotary Run on July 4th, 2026 as the main focus, and we discussed the logistics and job assignments. The excitement is building! We are hoping for record turnout pending pleasant weather.

We also acknowledged that we could not have gotten the word out about the race to the magnitude we have without the incredible work of Keryl “Kiki” Oliver! It was a unanimous decision to vote Kiki as our Public Image Chair.

It is interesting to see the reach of our event, and we would love everyone to be involved! Contact Ron Klieverik at ronklieverik@gmail.com for more information about being a volunteer.

The Rotary Club on Goshen is proud to host the 2026 Great American Weekend 5K & 10K Goshen Rotary Run on July 4th, 2026!! Ron Klieverik is the main man behind this yearly event. He has spent countless hours and many emails organizing behind the scenes as well as preparing for his transition to President of the club. Many thanks to new member, Kiki Oliver, who dove right in and volunteered many, many hours to market, brand, create digital content AND design T-shirts and sandwich boards for this event!! We are all in awe and so appreciative, thanks are just not enough!

Thank you to all our members who reached out to community businesses to solicit Sponsorships: Rolly Peacock for Garnet Health, Dana Distributers and Walden Savings Bank, Mark Gargiulo for TAM Enterprises, Orange Bank & Trust and Allegro Landscaping, Robert Doss for United Hospice and new member, Ginny Levenback for Quinn Oil and Confluence Running.

Taste of Goshen Update…

Thank you to all who attended the Taste of Goshen at the Harness Racing Museum. Many Rotarians worked hard behind the scenes to create a beautiful event for the community. A special thank you to Mark Gargiulo who takes the reins for organizing this event year after year. Our fundraising helps us to help our community by providing scholarships for local students, donating to many charitable organizations and performing service projects at i.e. Braeside Camp and the Regional Food Bank Hudson Valley. Our next event is the Great American 2026 Great American Weekend 5K & 10K Goshen Rotary Run on July 4th, 2026. Please join us!

Shelter Cup Update…..

So proud to have been a Silver Sponsor of the Shelter Cup! In spite of the weather, the event was successful and many happy pups had their pictures taken. We had our ShelterBox up and were there to answer questions about the program and the work that Rotary does here in the community and abroad. We would love for you to join us any Tuesday 7:30-8:30 am at the Goshen Public Library goshenrotary1928@gmail.com (Above, Maria Dwyer-Membership) (Below l-r Robert Doss, Director, Ron Klieverik, Secretary, Paul MacLane, President and Mark Gargiulo, VP, discussing ShelterBox and Rotary.

Meeting at Orange County Emergency Center

Our April 21st meeting took place at the Orange County Emergency Services 911 Center. Rotarian and Deputy Commissioner Robert Doss gave us a tour of the facility after our meeting, and we were thoroughly impressed by the scope of the services and state-of-the-art technology. Standing in the control room that could rival that of NASA, we could see there was true coordination between all departments from a 911 call, all the way through to true disaster preparedness and response……

On April 9, 2026, The Goshen Rotary Club marked its 98th anniversary since joining Rotary International on April 4, 1928. Under the theme “Almost a Century of Service Above Self,” Neal Frishberg hosted the event at Limoncello at the Orange Inn. After a rousing rendition of “God Bless America” by Mark Gargiulo, Neal read from the historical narrative that longtime member Ken Obremski had compiled and written for the Charter’s 50th and 75th anniversaries. Members then shared fun stories from club history, including a music and dance number by Doris Obremski originally performed by her children in Goshenanigans. Special guest, Jonathan Wallace, descendant of Augustus “Gus” Wallace—the Charter's first President—shared his family's longstanding dedication to the country, their involvement in Goshen, and work with Rotary Clubs locally and internationally.

Meeting Notes 3/17/26

Maureen Jagos, Director of the Braeside Camp visited with us this morning. She gave us an update on the upgrades that were being done on the cabins for the children. Ron Klieverik, (Pres-Elect) presented Maureen with an check for $3815. This was from the District matching grant program. That was in addition to the $7000 we donated already.
