Our Hero, John Gilfeather
United States Army, Town of Red Hook
John “Jack” Gilfeather devoted much of his life to serving his country and community. While attending college, he served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve before enlisting in the United States Army, where he served from 1954 to 1956. In 1956, he began a career with IBM as a senior systems analyst in Kingston and Poughkeepsie, New York, and became a member of the company’s Quarter Century Club.
John’s commitment to Red Hook touched many parts of community life. He was a longtime parishioner of St. Christopher’s Church, coached and supported Red Hook Little League, and enjoyed friendships through the Red Hook Golf Club and its Tuesday night Supper Club.
His dedication also extended to public office. John served for 10 years as a Village of Red Hook trustee and six years on the school board, including a term as board president. He then served as Red Hook Town Supervisor for 16 years, helping guide the community he called home.
Beyond Red Hook, John served on the executive committee of the Association of Towns of the State of New York, including as its president. He also helped establish two insurance organizations supporting local governments across the state.
Through military service, civic leadership, and years of volunteering, John made a lasting contribution to the lives of others.
