Guest Speakers
President Jimmy introduced Charles Mitchell, the Orange County Commissioner of Consumer Affairs and Weights and Measures. Commissioner Mitchell lives in Warwick with his wife and three children. He has been commissioner for 10 years.

Commissioner Mitchell discussed the role of Weights & Measures in maintaining accurate measuring devices throughout Orange County. His department monitors everything from fuel pumps to deli scales and everything in between. Inspectors are sent out on a daily basis to monitor the accuracy of these devices, and to issues violations in the event of discrepancies in calibration.  Right now the agency has a staff of three inspectors (temporarily down from five). The commissioner stressed that the agency protects both business operators and consumers.

The office of Consumer Affairs advocates on behalf of consumers. Part of their role is to educate the public in avoiding scams. (Commissioner Mitchell applauded President Jim for being a tremendous advocate of his agency.) The mission of the Orange County Department of Consumer Affairs is to promote an atmosphere of trust for consumers in the marketplace and in which honest Orange County based businesses can thrive. To provide Orange County Consumers assistance and advice in handling problems encountered with the business community and if necessary within applicable laws penalize those businesses that would take advantage of consumers by illegal or deceptive trade practices.
