Meeting Notes

Chris presented newest member, Mark Thabet, with his membership certificate and 4-Way Test document. Welcome aboard, Mark, happy to have you with us!

Vince - club secretary and web guy!—alerted us that we will soon be receiving some tutorials on how to get the most out of the website and a couple of neat apps. One of the apps lets you know of Rotary meetings with a 40-mile radius; the other gives you access to the membership directory.

Vince also updated the website with a ShelterBox link, so you can see all of the good work ShelterBox is doing.

If there’s something you’d like to see on the page, please contact Vince. He may be able to add it.

Vince says the District is very happy with our site; it’s one of the best in the area! Good work, Vince!

Harry left flyers on the table announcing the upcoming Braeside BBQ fundraiser: Craft, Beer, Wine, & BBQ, Saturday, October 21st, 12:30-5 pm. Click here for further information.

President Jimmy reminded the membership to keep tallies of their donations toward Rotary efforts—whether monetary, time, etc. He would like to track our efforts more closely and report back to the District. Please track from July 1st to roughly the end of September.

Our four October meetings will be lunch meeting’s at Delancey’s.

Rotary Minute

Bob’s Rotary minute was drawn from a recent Rotarian article addressing the history of women in Rotary through the experience of a small club in California. This, from the Duarte Rotary club’s site:

In 1987, women join Rotary. On 4 May, the U.S. Supreme Court rules that Rotary International may not exclude women from membership based on gender. Hundreds of women across the United States are admitted to Rotary. The club that started the legal battle, the Rotary Club of Duarte, California, is reinstated after its termination in 1978 for admitting women.

In 1989, the Council on Legislation votes to eliminate the requirement that club membership be limited to males, permitting clubs worldwide to admit women.

Bob ended with an “Amen to that”! Stating that the women in our club have proven to be great leaders and movers and shakers!

Sgt. @ Arms

Mark was picked to be substitute Sgt-at-Arms for the day. He began by collecting dollars from the late-comers, early leavers, and the pinless.

Chris gave a Happy dollar for a helpful conversation he’d had with a local landscape design artist (our sgt-at-arms, per chance?). He gave a second Happy dollar to have our newest Rotarian, Mark Thabet, at lunch with us today. Welcome to the club, Mark!

Ron gave a Happy (advertising) dollar for all of the excellent work done by Cornerstone. He said their latest production of Tesla’s Letters was excellent. (Editor’s Own Shameless Advertising Note: Many of Cornerstone’s productions are brought to you courtesy of your local library. Tesla’s Letters was underwritten by the Library, as is the annual Shakespeare-In-The-Park!)  Ron stressed that club members should check out their productions. You will not be disappointed!

Dick gave a Happy dollar that Buzz is feeling better after his recent surgery. Get well quick, Buzz!

Ed gave a Happy dollar for Mark, our newest member.

Rolly gave a Happy dollar to be back in town for more than 5 days. Welcome back, Rolly!

Marty gave a Happy dollar to see prospective member, Doug, here with us today. He gave another Happy dollar for having just returned from a trip to the Galapagos Islands!

Vince gave a Happy dollar for having just returned from a 9 day cruise.

Tom gave a Happy dollar that the Goshen Rotary Scholarship Foundation meeting earlier today had been very fruitful.

Jack gave 5 Happy dollars for our impromptu sgt-at-arms.

Honorary Rotarian, Joe, gave a Happy dollar for having just returned from 4 days in Las Vegas without having lost any money.

Jimmy was Happy that there was at least one good looking person in the group and gave a dollar for Hannah.

Prospective member, Doug, gave a Happy dollar for a recent article in the newspaper about the Hambeltonian. He extended his appreciation to the club for our support and assistance.

Having met earlier in the day, Jack gave the Club an assessment of the current financial picture of the Goshen Rotary Scholarship Foundation. Three documents were distributed to each table: the FYE 17 Financial Statement; a bar graph chart demonstrating the Fund’s growth since its inception; and a flyer describing the Foundation and its mission.

Tom was next up at the podium, though happy that the fund has been growing healthily, he expressed concerns about the differential between the fund’s growth and the skyrocketing cost of education. He explained how the scholarships were drawn from the interest and dividends, and not the corpus. He stressed the importance of the Foundation as a high-profile aspect of Goshen Rotary’s image in the community, and urged the general membership and board to recognize that importance, as well. Finally, he asked members to consider the Foundation in their estate planning, that sizable bequests would be necessary to ensure the long-term viability of this crucial service provided by the club.

President Jimmy concluded their presentation with a heart-felt ‘thank you” to the Scholarship Foundation team for all of the hard work they put into this crucial function of the club.
